CLOSE TO THE EDGE MASTERING is owned by Jon Astley, a British record producer who also recorded and released two albums as a singer-songwriter in the late 1980s. His most commercially successful song was “Jane’s Getting Serious”, later popularized by a Heinz ketchup television commercial starring a pre-Friends cast member Matt LeBlanc.
As a producer, he is best known for his work with The Who and the remastering supervision for all of the group’s back catalog reissues.
Jon has also has produced albums for Eric Clapton, Barclay James Harvest, Corey Hart, and Deborah Harry and has mastered records for The Who, Charlie Watts, Abba, George Harrison, Tori Amos, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Jools Holland, Tom Jones, Judas Priest, Emmylou Harris, Damien Dempsey, Tears for Fears, Led Zeppelin, Hothouse Flowers, Level 42, The Boomtown Rats, John Mayall, Toto, Norah Jones, Stereophonics, KT Tunstall, Van Morrison, Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel, Slade, Sting, Porcupine Tree, Bono and The Lancashire Hotpots.
Jon joined the staff of Olympic Studios in 1973 and was soon working as Glyn Johns’ regular assistant, engineering on projects with The Eagles, Joan Armatrading, Eric Clapton, and David Bowie.
He became a freelance engineer in the late ’70s and produced The Who’s ‘Who Are You’ and Eric Clapton’s ’Just One Night’. At the time Jon also produced first time artists, The Jags and The Distractions, having chart success with both.
In the ’80s he turned his attention to North America and produced Corey Hart’s first two albums, which included hits ‘Sunglasses at Night’ and ’Never Surrender’, both no. 1 records and producing sales of 4 million. He also had success producing Marilyn Martin, Barclay James Harvest, The Pretty Things and Roger Daltrey before signing to Atlantic Records as a recording artist.
